Trusted advisor, it is an often overused term, but to excel as a VMware Technical Account Manager you need to earn the trust of your customers. If you are interested in joining VMware as a Technical Account Manager, here are some of the key ingredients for becoming a trusted advisor:
Honesty
Is any position or role sustainable without honesty? If you are not a person of your word, you will quickly find yourself not meeting your customer's expectations and it could have a lasting effect on your career and your organization's reputation. In the role of a Technical Account Manager, honesty is the key building block for trust. When you are honest with your customer and have their self-interest in mind, these small gestures accumulate over time and your customers will come to trust your recommendations.
It's simple, approach your customers with honesty, truthfulness, and an attitude to provide the best service possible, and then you have nothing to fear when something doesn't meet expectations.
Integrity
While many equate honesty with integrity, they are not the same at all. Honesty is telling the truth. Integrity is being consistent. If you say that a piece of wood or steel "has integrity," you mean that it is consistent; there are no voids or weaknesses in it. The same is true of all of us. Honesty is one element, but it's not the only one by any means. Do you treat all your colleagues, business partners, and customers the same way? Do you communicate consistently? Do you do what you say you will do?
Each of these are elements of integrity. They are about having the character to be consistent even when it's not popular - or easy.
Excellence
What is the simplest way of distinguishing yourself from others? Being excellent at what you do and striving to deliver the absolute best results that you can every day. Making sure your customers know that when you make a commitment to them,
you will follow through and they will get more from the relationship
then they expected to get. With this mindset, your customers will understand that you are fully invested in helping them get the most out of the technology investments they have made in our company to transform their business.
Derek Jeter's quote really speaks volume to excellence, "There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do."
Trust is earned. After you have earned that trust, you will no longer be seen through your customer's eyes as having just technical expertise or problem-solving skills, but that you have the ability to put their challenges in context and can provide perspective. You become the person your customer turns to when an issue first arises, often in times of a crisis, a change, or a success.
